How this ranking works

MarketCrystal pulls live listings from retailer feeds, extracts the unit-defining spec from each product title (TB of capacity, condition, interface, form factor), and divides price by capacity to get $/TB. Ambiguous listings are parsed by an AI extraction layer; anything below our confidence threshold is excluded from the ranking rather than shown with a guessed number. Listings link directly to the seller — we never mark up prices.

MarketCrystal may earn a commission on purchases made through Buy links — this never affects rankings. See our Affiliate Disclosure.

Frequently asked questions

Is manufacturer recertified safe to buy?

Recertified drives are pulls or returns that the manufacturer (or an authorized partner) has retested to spec, wiped, and re-warrantied — usually 1 to 5 years. That warranty is the whole point: if the drive dies, you get it replaced, so the failure risk is transferred rather than eliminated. "Manufacturer Recertified" is a genuinely different thing from an anonymous eBay "used" drive with no coverage, and on our board it is consistently the cheapest $/TB tier — recert 12 to 16TB enterprise drives typically floor in the low-$20s per TB, well under new. The sane playbook: buy recert with a warranty, run RAID or a real 3-2-1 backup (you should do that with new drives too), and check the SMART hours on arrival. Filter this board to Manufacturer Recertified to see the current floor.

SMR vs CMR — which should I buy for the best $/TB?

CMR (conventional magnetic recording) writes tracks without overlap; SMR (shingled) overlaps them to pack in more capacity, which makes sustained random writes and RAID rebuilds much slower because the drive has to re-write whole zones. For a NAS, a ZFS/RAID array, or anything write-heavy, buy CMR — full stop. SMR is fine for cold archival, backups, and write-once/read-many data where the price gap is real. The catch is that the raw $/TB difference is usually small, so most buyers optimizing for $/TB on this board are already looking at CMR enterprise drives anyway. Where we can identify recording tech it is in the specs; when a listing does not state it, assume large-capacity enterprise/NAS drives (12TB+) are CMR and desktop 2.5-inch and some low-cost 2 to 8TB drives may be SMR — verify the exact model before buying for an array.

Why are 12–16TB drives the $/TB sweet spot?

Two curves cross in that range. Below it, the fixed cost of the enclosure, motor, controller, and packaging is spread over too few terabytes, so small drives look expensive per TB. Above it, the newest high-capacity drives (20TB+) carry a bleeding-edge premium and the recert/surplus supply is thinner. The 12 to 16TB band is where enterprise drives have been shipping in volume for years, so the used and recertified supply is deep and the per-TB price is lowest. On this board the cheapest listings are almost always in that band — sort by $/TB and you will see it. If you need raw capacity per bay, this is also the size to buy.

What's a good price per TB for a hard drive in 2026?

It depends on condition. As of this board, recertified enterprise drives in the 12 to 16TB sweet spot typically floor in the low-$20s per TB; new drives run meaningfully higher, often $15 to $25/TB for large capacities and much more for small ones. Anything at or below the recert floor for a warrantied drive is a good deal; new-drive $/TB below the low-$20s on a large capacity is excellent. Rather than trust a static number that goes stale, check the live board above — it re-ranks every hour and the top rows are the current real floor for each condition. The number that matters is $/TB, not sticker price: a cheap 4TB drive is usually worse value than a "pricey" 14TB one.

Are shucked external drives cheaper per TB?

Sometimes, historically — big external USB drives (WD Elements, Easystore, Seagate Expansion) have periodically undercut the same bare drive on $/TB, and "shucking" (removing the drive from the enclosure) was a real hobbyist arbitrage. But it is inconsistent, the internal drive is often a white-label model you can't verify until it's open, shucking voids the warranty, and some shucked drives need a tape trick or a molex fix for the 3.3V pin. This board ranks bare and recertified internal drives with real warranties, which for most buyers beats gambling on a shuck. If you specifically want the shucking play, watch external-drive sales directly; if you want the lowest verifiable warrantied $/TB, use the recert rows here.
