What's the difference between panel-only $/W and installed $/W?
It's the single biggest source of confusion in solar pricing. Panel-only $/W is just the module hardware — what this board ranks. Installed $/W (the number in most news headlines and quotes) bundles in the racking, inverters, wiring, permits, labor, and the installer's margin, and it is many times higher: bare panels commonly run under a dollar per watt, while a fully installed residential system is often several dollars per watt. Neither number is wrong — they measure different things. If you're a DIY or off-grid buyer sourcing hardware, panel-only $/W (this board) is your number. If you're getting a turnkey install, compare installers on total installed $/W and treat the panel cost as a small slice of it. Just never compare a panel-only price to an installed quote and think one is a rip-off.
Are used or surplus solar panels worth it?
For the right buyer, yes — surplus, B-stock, and used panels can post the lowest $/W on the market. Solar modules have no moving parts and degrade slowly (roughly half a percent a year), so a lightly-used or cosmetically-blemished panel often has most of its 25-year life left. The tradeoffs: little or no warranty, you must inspect for cracked glass, delamination, and hotspots, older panels are lower-efficiency (more roof area and racking per watt), and connectors may be dated. For a ground-mount, an off-grid cabin, a shed, or any project where roof space is cheap and you can test each panel, surplus is excellent value on $/W. For a premium roof install where labor dominates cost, paying a bit more per watt for new, warrantied, high-efficiency panels usually pencils out because you're amortizing the same install labor over more watts.
What's a good price per watt for solar panels in 2026?
For bare panels the market has been remarkably cheap — check the live board above for today's floor, but new mono panels have widely traded well under a dollar per watt, and surplus/used stock can go lower still. Anything at or below the current top rows here is a good hardware deal. Context matters: this is panel-only $/W, so a great $/W on the panel does not mean a cheap installed system — install labor and balance-of-system dominate a turnkey job. The board re-ranks hourly; sort by $/W and buy from the floor, and weigh efficiency if roof space (not just hardware cost) is your constraint.
Mono vs poly vs bifacial — which is best for $/W?
Monocrystalline has essentially won the mainstream: it's higher-efficiency than polycrystalline and, thanks to scale, mono $/W is now usually as cheap or cheaper than poly, so there's little reason to seek out new poly today. Bifacial panels capture light on both faces and can add real yield when mounted over a reflective surface (light ground, gravel, a white roof, snow) with an air gap behind them — on a flush rooftop the back-side gain is small, so you may pay a slight $/W premium for little benefit. The honest ranking for $/W value: mono is the default; bifacial is worth a small premium ONLY if your mount actually exposes the back; new poly rarely makes sense anymore.
