The price on the gas station sign is one of the most-watched numbers in the economy, and one of the most quietly misleading. It is a price per gallon — and a gallon is not the thing you are buying. What you are buying is energy: the capacity to move a vehicle a certain distance or run an engine for a certain time. And different fuels, at the same price per gallon, deliver very different amounts of that energy.
The honest unit for fuel is price per unit of energy — or, for a vehicle owner, its close cousin, cost per mile. Both cut through the gallon-versus-gallon illusion that the pump is built around.
Why the gallon is the wrong denominator
A gallon is a unit of volume, not energy. Fuels differ in energy density — how much usable energy is packed into each gallon. Diesel, for example, contains meaningfully more energy per gallon than gasoline. So a gallon of diesel and a gallon of gasoline at the same pump price are not the same purchase; the diesel gallon carries more energy, which in an efficient engine translates to more distance.
This is why comparing fuels by price per gallon is a category error. You are comparing volumes when you should be comparing energy. A fuel can be more expensive per gallon and still cheaper per unit of energy delivered — or per mile driven — because it packs more work into each gallon.
The unit price fixes this. Convert price per gallon to price per unit of energy (using each fuel’s energy density) and you can finally compare fuels on the thing that matters: the energy you are paying for, not the volume the pump measures.
The premium-fuel trap
The clearest place the unit lens pays off is the regular-versus-premium decision, which the market has turned into a small but relentless tax on confused buyers.
Premium gasoline costs more per gallon. Its higher octane rating resists engine knock, which matters for engines specifically designed to require it. But octane is not “more energy” — premium and regular have very similar energy content per gallon. So for a vehicle that does not require premium, buying it delivers essentially no extra energy, no extra distance, and no benefit — just a higher price per unit of the energy you were going to burn anyway.
The unit price makes this stark. If premium costs more per gallon but delivers the same energy per gallon, its price per unit of energy is simply higher, full stop. Unless your engine actually requires the higher octane to run correctly, premium is a worse buy on the only axis that counts. The pump presents it as an upgrade. The unit price reveals it as a markup.
The filter, as always: octane is a constraint, not a value axis. If your engine requires premium, that requirement filters your choices — you buy premium because the engine needs it, not because it is better value. If your engine does not require it, octane is irrelevant and you optimize the unit price, which means regular.
Cost per mile: the vehicle owner’s unit price
For anyone actually operating a vehicle, the most useful form of the fuel unit price folds in the vehicle’s efficiency:
cost per mile = fuel price per gallon / miles per gallon
This is the true bottom-line unit, because it combines what the fuel costs with how efficiently your specific vehicle converts it to distance. It is what lets you honestly compare a more expensive fuel in an efficient vehicle against a cheaper fuel in an inefficient one — and it is what makes cross-powertrain comparisons possible at all.
Extend it and you can compare gasoline, diesel, and electric on one axis: cost per mile. An electric vehicle has no gallons, but it has a cost per mile (electricity price divided by miles per kWh), and that number sits directly alongside a gasoline vehicle’s cost per mile. Suddenly the incomparable becomes comparable — which is the entire purpose of a unit price. The pump can only show you dollars per gallon. Cost per mile shows you what you actually spend to go somewhere, regardless of what is in the tank or battery.
Reading the fuel market
Fuel prices swing on crude oil markets, refining capacity, seasonal blend changes, regional taxes, and supply disruptions — a genuinely volatile commodity. But the buyer’s discipline is stable through all of it:
- Compare fuels by energy, not volume. A cheaper gallon is not always cheaper energy.
- Ignore octane unless your engine requires it. Premium is a markup, not an upgrade, for engines that do not need it.
- Think in cost per mile. It is the only unit that combines fuel price with your vehicle’s efficiency and lets you compare across fuel types and powertrains.
- Account for region. Fuel taxes and regional supply make the same fuel a different price a few miles apart. The unit price is local.
